Course Description
Introduction to Recreation with Special Populations - Philosophy and basic concepts relating to planning and conducting recreation programs with the disabled, aged, and disadvantaged in community & institutional settings. Includes concepts and techniques in program planning, leadership, and adaptation of facilities, activities, and equipment in recreation services to special populations. Requires five field observation visits.

Learning Outcomes
Through the Portfolio Assessment process, students will demonstrate that they can appropriately address the following outcomes:

  • Explain the role and function of the therapeutic recreation specialist in clinical and community settings.
  • Explain and give examples of some of the adaptations used to meet the leisure needs, interests, abilities, and challenges of persons with special needs.
  • Describe a variety of therapeutic recreation settings, participants served, and types of activities offered.
  • Explain the therapeutic recreation process and models.
  • Describe the process of planning, outlining and leading therapeutic recreation activities.
  • List and describe the five field visits you experienced upon taking this course.
