CREATING AND IMPLEMENTING THE ELECTRONIC ENTERPRISE


COURSE DESCRIPTION

Creating and Implementing the Electronic Enterprise explores the theories and practices to achieve effective marketing of products and services utilizing the Internet and other related digital technology. The course recognizes that electronically-driven commerce is an evolving realm, one that encourages an approach to the challenges and opportunities of electronic enterprise from a problem-solving viewpoint. The course will use business cases and student-conducted research to explore the dynamic relationships between the electronic enterprise and the e-commerce marketplace. The course will also examine the broad reach of electronic enterprise, covering both public and nonprofit organizations and private corporations.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

After completing this course, you should be able to:

  1. Examine traditional commerce models and explain their evolution toward digital technology.
  2. Evaluate the roles digital technologies play in the management of electronic enterprise.
  3. Analyze and evaluate marketing concepts, communications, social contexts, and strategies used to manage product- or service-based electronic enterprises.
  4. Explain and evaluate the current state of e-enterprise and its future roles as both business model and process.

You are required to read the three modular lectures, one for each module, which are provided in the Lectures area of the course Web site.

Suggested Readings and Suggestions for Further Research

In the study assignment of each module, you are given a list of suggested readings, suggestions for further research, and Web links, which you are encouraged to locate and refer to as you prepare your written assignments, online discussions, and final project. If you reference any of these sources or others that you find on your own, please be sure to cite them properly.

When suggested readings are available online, a link will be provided within the listing. When suggested readings are articles that are available through the New Jersey Virtual Academic Library Environment (VALE), it will be noted next to the item. VALE is the virtual library system of the state of New Jersey and provides access to numerous full-text business databases through an affiliation with Thomas Edison State College. You may also use VALE to find reference articles not listed in each module's study assignment. Users access VALE through the link in this paragraph or by going to the Library Resources link at the top of the course site and then clicking Virtual Academic LIbrary Environment (VALE).

Another way to access business database articles is through the New Jersey State Library CyberDesk (www.njstatelib.org/CyberDesk). A library card—free to Thomas Edison State College students, staff, and mentors—is needed to access databases remotely. Publisher's Web Site

The textbook publisher provides free access to the textbook's companion Web site (http://wps.prenhall.com/bp_laudon_ecommerce_5/). This site provides resources for additional learning and links to Web sites for the study of e-commerce topics. When you reach the site, click the chapter you are studying. For each chapter, you may find the self-study quiz helpful. Other general information that can be located from each chapter includes links to tech tutorials and links to companies' Web sites (under More Resources). The site also provides some suggestions for preparing a business plan.

A Note about Online Research and Documentation

A lot of information is available on the World Wide Web, but, as you probably have already discovered, not everything you find and read on the Web is accurate, reputable, and reliable. In searching the Web for information, you must exercise discrimination.

Besides using an Internet search engine such as Google (www.Google.com) to find information on the Web, consider searching for suitable articles in one of the full-text databases available through VALE, the New Jersey Virtual Academic Library Environment.

Finally, when writing a paper or replying to a discussion forum topic, you must cite your sources (use documentation to identify the material drawn from your readings). This is a basic requirement of copyright law, to make sure that you give proper credit to your sources of information and do not pass off someone else's work as your own, intentionally or unintentionally. Failure to use proper documentation is considered plagiarism, a serious breach of academic honesty and a violation of U.S. law. ASSESSMENT METHODS

For your formal work in the course, you are required to participate in online discussion forums, complete written assignments, take a proctored online midterm examination, and complete a final project. See below for more details.

Discussion Forums

In addition to an ungraded "Introductions" forum in module 1, Creating and Implementing the Electronic Enterprise requires you to participate in eleven (11) graded discussion forums.

Online communication between and among participants and mentor is not only central to success in any distance-delivered course, it is critical to understanding the challenges of communicating electronically—a key component of electronic enterprise. Instructional strategy uses questions and problems to encourage idea-sharing, constructive criticism, and debate.

Participation in online discussions involves two distinct activities: an initial response to a discussion question and at least two subsequent comments on classmates' responses.

Use the information in your course materials as well as outside resources, either in print or online, to prepare your discussion. There are many helpful Web sites that may contain useful information. Be sure to give the sources of all your research, both print and online.

You will be evaluated both on the quality of your responses (i.e., your understanding of readings, concepts, and practices as demonstrated by well-articulated, critical thinking) and quantity of your participation (i.e., the number of times you participate meaningfully in the assigned forums). Responses and comments should be properly proofread and edited, professional, and respectful. If you use any research materials to prepare your discussions, remember to give proper credit in your postings.

Meaningful participation in online discussions is relevant to the content, adds value, and advances the discussion. Comments such as "I agree" and "ditto" are not considered value-adding participation. Therefore, when you agree or disagree with a classmate, the reading, or your mentor, state and support your agreement or disagreement.

Written Assignments

You are required to complete three (3) written assignments. The written assignments are on a variety of topics associated with the course modules. Each written assignment contains chapter-specific questions as well as a final question that asks you to draw on all the information you studied in the module.

These assignments are the means for you to demonstrate your analytic, assessment, reporting, and critiquing skills, as well as to explore topics of interest in greater depth than the class can do as a whole. The purposes of the assignments are to:

Preparing and Submitting Assignments

Prepare your written assignments using whatever word processing program you have on your computer. Include your name at the top of the paper, as well as the course name and code and the semester and year in which you are enrolled.

Before submitting your first assignment, check with your mentor to determine whether your word processing software is compatible with your mentor's software. If so, you can submit your work as you prepared it. If not, save your assignment as a rich-text (.rtf) file, using the Save As command of your software program. Rich text retains basic formatting and can be read by any other word processing program.

When satisfied that your assignment represents your best work, submit it to your mentor.

Midterm Examination

The midterm is a proctored online exam. It is two hours long and covers all material assigned in Modules 1 through 6. It consists of multiple choice questions and identifications.

The exam is closed-book. This means that you may not bring any course materials to the exam site or any other reference sources or sources of information.

For the midterm, you are required to use the College's Online Proctor Service (OPS). Please refer to the "Examinations and Proctors" section of the Online Student Handbook (see General Information area of the course Web site) for further information about scheduling and taking online exams and for all exam policies and procedures. You are strongly advised to schedule your exam within the first week of the semester.

Statement about Cheating

You are on your honor not to cheat during an exam. Cheating means:

If there is evidence that you have cheated or plagiarized in an exam, the exam will be declared invalid, and you will fail the course.

Final Project

You are required to complete and submit a final project during the last week of the semester in which you are enrolled. The final project consists of a business plan.

For the final project you will prepare a 1,050- to 1,400-word paper (4.5 to 5.5 pages double-spaced) in which you develop a business plan for an e-commerce product or service and discuss the reasoning behind your plan elements and choices. The product or service may be a stand-alone Internet offering ("pure play") or one that complements a brick-and-mortar business. It may be a new offering or an existing product, but it should be your particular version.

You will be given directions about how to prepare and submit the business plan in the Final Project area of the course site. You may submit the project any time during the last week of the semester, but you must submit it no later than midnight Saturday (eastern time) of that week. (See course Calendar). If you are on a course extension, you will need to arrange with your mentor a time to submit the final project.

Turnitin Requirement for Final Project

You are required to submit the final project in this course to Turnitin.com, an academic plagiarism prevention site, prior to submitting the project within your course space. You will receive immediate written feedback from Turnitin regarding writing style as well as a plagiarism gauge with tips for proper citations. You then have the opportunity to edit your assignment with this feedback in mind and resubmit it to Turnitin for additional checking. Once you are satisfied with the project, you are required to submit the Turnitin feedback (also known as the originality report)  for the final version along with the project itself within the course space.

Students please note: You have the option of submitting any of your assignments to Turnitin.com. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY

Students at Thomas Edison State College are expected to exhibit the highest level of academic citizenship. Plagiarism

Using someone else’s work as your own is plagiarism. Thomas Edison State College takes a strong stance against plagiarism, and students found to be plagiarizing will be severely penalized. If you copy phrases, sentences, paragraphs, or whole documents word-for-word—or if you paraphrase by changing a word here and there—without identifying the author, or without identifying it as a direct quote, then you are plagiarizing. Please keep in mind that this type of identification applies to Internet sources as well as to print-based sources. Copying and pasting from the Internet, without using quotation marks and without acknowledging sources, constitutes plagiarism. Accidentally copying the words and ideas of another writer does not excuse the charge of plagiarism. It is easy to jot down notes and ideas from many sources and then write your own paper without knowing which words are your own and which are someone else’s. It is more difficult to keep track of each and every source. However, the conscientious writer who wishes to avoid plagiarizing never fails to keep careful track of sources.

Always be aware that if you write without acknowledging the sources of your ideas, you run the risk of being charged with plagiarism.

Clearly, plagiarism, no matter the degree of intent to deceive, defeats the purpose of education. If you plagiarize deliberately, you are not educating yourself, and you are wasting your time on courses meant to improve your skills. If you plagiarize through carelessness, you are deceiving yourself.

Disciplinary Process

First-time incidents of academic dishonesty concerning plagiarism may reflect ignorance of appropriate citation requirements. Mentors will make a good faith effort to address all first-time offenses that occur in courses. In these cases, the mentor may impose sanctions that serve as a learning exercise for the offender. These may include the completion of tutorials, assignment rewrites, or any other reasonable learning tool including a lower grade when appropriate. The mentor will notify the student by e-mail. Decisions about the sanctions applied for subsequent plagiarism offenses or other violations will be made by the appropriate dean’s office, with the advice of the mentor or staff person who reported the violation. The student will be notified via certified mail of the decision. Options for sanctions include:
